📌 Day 1: Senaru Jungle Gate ➔ Senaru Crater Rim / Plawangan Senaru (Camp 1)
📌 Day 2: Senaru Crater Rim ➔ Segara Anak Lake (Camp 2)
📌 Day 3: Segara Anak Lake ➔ Sembalun Crater Rim (Camp 3)
📌 Day 4: Summit Attack 3,726m ➔ Sembalun Village ➔ Finish at Senaru
⚠️ Safety Navigation Guide & Terrain Conditions Per Section
Senaru Jungle Gate ➔ Pos 2 Montong Satas (Section 1)
Terrain: Solid dirt trail dominated by sprawling giant tree roots. Dense tropical forest, highly humid.
Risks: Slipping on wet/slick roots and early dehydration due to stuffy, heavy jungle air.
Safety Actions: Step firmly on the soil between roots; never step directly onto the smooth tree root surfaces. Unzip jacket vents and take small sips of water every 15 minutes without waiting to feel thirsty.
Pos 2 ➔ Pos 3 Mondokan Lokak (Section 2)
Terrain: High dirt ridges mixed with loose volcanic rocks. Incline slopes reach 35–40 degrees.
Risks: Thigh/calf muscle strains or cramps caused by over-striding on tall steps.
Safety Actions: Apply the Rest Step technique (lock/straighten your rear knee for one second on every step) to rest your quad muscles sequentially. Maximize trekking pole support to offload weight from joints.
Pos 3 ➔ Plawangan Senaru / Crater Rim (Section 3)
Terrain: Exposed rocky steps without shade, extreme slopes up to 50 degrees. Flanked by deep open cliffs.
Risks: Slipping backward, sudden heavy wind gusts, and hypothermia onset when evening fog rolls in.
Safety Actions: Practice the Three-Point Contact rule (ensure at least three points of your body are anchored firmly to the rocks while scrambling). Put on your windproof/warm jacket immediately upon arriving at the rim before your body chills down.
Plawangan Senaru ➔ Segara Anak Lake (Section 4)
Terrain: Very steep and narrow caldera cliffs. Equipped with steel handrails and thin iron ladders.
Risks: Falling into the crater ravine, falling rocks triggered by climbers above, and severe knee joint strain.
Safety Actions: Face toward the cliff wall while climbing down if the path becomes nearly vertical. Maintain a safe distance of at least 3 meters between hikers. Loudly shout "ROCK!!" if any loose stone slides down. Keep your knees slightly bent like springs when descending.
Segara Anak Lake ➔ Plawangan Sembalun (Section 5)
Terrain: Steep rocky ridges, thick dust trails, and temporary iron ladders hanging over deep caldera cliffs on the opposing side.
Risks: Extreme physical exhaustion, vertigo/fear of heights, and intense direct heat stroke from the sun.
Safety Actions: Lock your eyes onto the rock wall ahead or your immediate footsteps; do not look down into the gorge. Ensure only one person stands on an iron ladder at any given time to avoid overloading the structural frames.
Plawangan Sembalun ➔ Rinjani Summit 3,726 mASL (Section 6 - Summit Attack)
Terrain: Letter-S trail of ultra-thick volcanic ash sand, unstable shifting scree, freezing winds, and sub-zero temperatures. Two steps forward means sliding one step back.
Risks: Severe hypothermia (0°C), eye/respiratory tract inflammation from dust storms, darkness disorientation, and AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) attacks.
Safety Actions: You must wear protective goggles/sunglasses and a buff/dust mask before entering the sandy ridge area. Step directly into the existing footprints of climbers ahead where the sand is pre-compacted. If you experience severe binding headaches or heavy nausea (AMS symptoms), abort the summit immediately and descend to lower elevations with the Guide.
Plawangan Sembalun ➔ Savanna ➔ Sembalun Village (Section 7)
Terrain: Descending through deep loose dust dunes (Tanjakan Penyesalan version of descending), followed by long, flat single-tracks across the scorching hot savanna without any tree shades.
Risks: Slipping on fine dust, foot blistering from shoe friction, and severe heat stroke.
Safety Actions: Strap on Gaiters over your boots to prevent sand from slipping inside and tearing your skin or triggering blisters. Slide using your boot heels on deep dust fields. Reapply sunblock and wear wide-brim hats in the Sembalun savanna.
