📌 Morning Schedule & Pos-to-Pos Detailed Journey:
-
06:30 AMMorning Breakfast: Enjoy a fresh, energizing breakfast served at your accommodation or at our main headquarters in Senaru Village.
-
07:00 AMRegistration: Walk a short distance to the Senaru Rinjani Trekking Center (RTC) office to register your official e-Rinjani ticket, cross-check medical certificates, and meet your porter crew.
-
07:30 AMTrekking Commences: Pass the official jungle entrance gate at an initial altitude of 601 masl and begin your journey into Mount Rinjani National Park.
1. Senaru Gate to Pos 1 (Bunut Ngengkang)
± 1.5 hoursAltitude 601 masl to 915 masl. Pleasantly warm but highly humid (24°C - 28°C). The terrain consists of gradual dirt trails winding underneath a dense tropical jungle canopy. Excellent shade from the morning sun.
Pace yourself carefully right from the start. The high jungle humidity will cause heavy sweating early on. Drink water in small, consistent sips to avoid immediate dehydration. Keep an eye out for local coffee plantations and exotic bird species.
2. Pos 1 to Pos 2 (Montong Satas) — 🍽️ Rest Area & Lunch Break
± 2 hoursAltitude 915 masl up to 1,500 masl. Temperatures cool down slightly due to the thick foliage (22°C - 26°C). The trail features an increasing incline, stepping over large exposed tree roots and damp jungle soil.
While waiting for the fresh, hot lunch prepared by our porter team, loosen your shoelaces to completely restore proper blood circulation to your feet. Do light stretching on your calves, quads, and lower back. Do not sit completely still immediately after stopping; keep moving slightly so your muscles do not lock up for the steeper sections ahead. You may spot wild black monkeys (lutung) swinging in the high canopy here.
3. Pos 2 to Pos 3 (Mondokan Lolon)
± 1.5 hoursAltitude 1,500 masl to 2,000 masl. Temperatures drop further (18°C - 22°C). The jungle canopy begins to thin out slightly, shifting from massive tropical hardwood trees to high-altitude mountain pine trees (Casuarina). The path becomes noticeably steeper with deep dirt steps.
Keep your walking pace steady to avoid stomach cramps right after lunch. Take a short 5-10 minute break at Pos 3 to consume quick carbohydrates (like chocolates, energy bars, or bananas) to refuel your body's energy banks before tackling the final open push to the rim.
4. Pos 3 to Senaru Crater Rim (Plawangan Senaru) — ⛺ Campsite Area
± 2 hoursAltitude 2,000 masl up to 2,641 masl. Temperatures drop drastically as the afternoon mountain fog rolls in, ranging from 12°C - 16°C on arrival and falling as low as 5°C - 8°C at night. The trail is open, steep, rocky, and can be quite dusty.
This final stretch is physically demanding. Use the "Rest Step" technique (lock your back knee for a fraction of a second with every single stride to momentarily rest your thigh muscles). As soon as you arrive at the crater rim camp, change out of your sweat-soaked clothes into completely dry gear, put on your thermal layers, beanie, and a thick jacket immediately to avoid hypothermia. Witness a legendary sunset above the clouds, enjoy a rich hot dinner, and rest well inside your tent.
Senaru Crater Rim to Senaru Village Finish Gate ➔ Next Destination
Capturing the sunrise over the volcanic lake and baby volcano, enjoying breakfast at the rim, pack up, trekking back down through the tropical rainforest, exiting the gate, and private car transfer to your next location.
📌 Pos-to-Pos Detailed Journey:
1. Sunrise Exploration & Breakfast at Senaru Crater Rim
06:00 AM - 07:30 AMAltitude 2,641 masl. Freezing and crisp morning air (5°C - 10°C).
Wake up early to catch the spectacular morning sun rising over the rim walls, illuminating the turquoise Segara Anak lake and the smoking cone of Mount Baru Jari below. Wear your warm gloves and jacket. Enjoy a hot cup of coffee or tea alongside a freshly made breakfast prepared by our crew before packing your daypack.
2. Senaru Crater Rim down to Pos 2 (Montong Satas)
± 2.5 hoursAltitude drops from 2,641 masl down to 1,500 masl. Temperatures gradually warm up as you descend back into the jungle canopy layer (18°C - 24°C). The upper trail is steep, loose, and dusty before transitioning into the root-heavy jungle floor.
Descending requires your quads and knees to work hard as brakes. Keep your trekking poles active to alleviate joint stress. Lean your torso slightly forward and keep your knees slightly bent; do not lock your joints to avoid impact injuries.
3. Pos 2 down to Senaru Village Registration Gate
± 2.5 hoursAltitude drops from 1,500 masl down to 601 masl. The weather turns hot and tropical again (26°C - 30°C). The path follows the familiar gradual jungle trails, flattening out completely as you approach the boundary lines of the village.
Your leg muscles will feel tired and jittery from the prolonged downhill steps. Maintain high focus so you do not trip over hidden tree roots or loose rocks. Drink plenty of fluids at Pos 1 to stay fully hydrated in the heat.
-
🏠Return to Senaru Basecamp: The Senaru gate marks the official end of your trek. Our basecamp team will meet you there with our vehicle and drive you a quick 5 minutes back to our main headquarters.
-
🚿Shower & Repack: Enjoy a fantastic, well-deserved hot shower at our basecamp, change into fresh clothes, and retrieve the heavy luggage you safely stored on Day 0.
-

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) – 2D1N SENARU CRATER RIM
Does the 2D1N Senaru Crater Rim package go down to the volcanic lake or hot springs?
No, it does not. This specific 2-day itinerary stops on the northern edge of the crater rim where the campsite is located. Going down to the lake and hot springs requires an extra 3 hours of downhill climbing and another 3 hours to climb back up, which can only be accommodated in our 3-day or 4-day packages.
Is this package suitable for families or older hikers?
Yes, this is the most family-friendly option on Mount Rinjani. Because the entire trail is heavily shaded by a tropical rainforest canopy for about 80% of the way, hikers are well protected from the direct heat of the tropical sun, making it much more manageable than the open savannas of Sembalun.
Where do we store our luggage during this 2-day trek?
You will leave your main travel suitcases and non-mountain gear safely at our LOMBOK RINJANI GUIDE basecamp in Senaru on Day 0. Since you enter and exit the mountain through the exact same gate in Senaru Village, your bags will be waiting for you at the basecamp when you finish on Day 2.
How cold does it get at the Senaru Crater Rim campsite at night?
The campsite sits at an altitude of 2,641 masl. Nighttime temperatures drop significantly, hovering between 5°C and 10°C. The rim can also experience thick evening mist or heavy condensation, which makes the air feel much colder. Packing a proper warm jacket, beanie, and socks is essential.
What kind of toilet facilities are available at the Senaru Crater Rim camp?
There are no public toilets on the mountain. To ensure your absolute comfort, privacy, and hygiene, the LOMBOK RINJANI GUIDE porter team carries a dedicated, private, enclosed toilet tent that they set up exclusively for your group at the campsite.
Is there mobile phone signal or internet network reception at the campsite?
Yes, mobile phone signal reception (especially from local providers like Telkomsel) is generally quite strong and stable along the Senaru Crater Rim. You will easily be able to send messages, make calls, or upload your spectacular sunset photos.
What kind of food and beverages are provided on this trek?
Our porter team will cook fresh, hot, and hygienic meals directly at the rest stations and campsite. Meals include rich local and Western dishes like fried rice, chicken soup, noodles, pancakes, sandwiches, fresh fruits, and biscuits. Unlimited safe mineral water and hot drinks (tea, coffee, hot chocolate) are provided.
Can I complete this trek if I have a mild fear of heights?
Yes, you can. The trail from Senaru Village to the crater rim is wide, solid, and safely enclosed inside the jungle for the majority of the hike. Unlike the ridge walks of the summit or the Torean route, there are no sheer vertical cliffs or exposed drop-offs along the Senaru ascent trail.
What time do we normally get back to Senaru Village on Day 2?
We generally arrive back at the Senaru village gate between 01:00 PM and 02:30 PM on Day 2. After taking a hot shower and repacking your bags at our basecamp, you will be ready to depart in our private car to your next destination by 03:30 PM.
Does the booking price include the National Park entrance tickets?
Yes, absolutely. The booking fee covered by LOMBOK RINJANI GUIDE includes your official e-Rinjani entrance tickets to the National Park for both days, mandatory local medical health checks before entering, and the standard medical trekking insurance provided by the National Park Authority.
