🗺️ Pos-to-Pos Detailed Journey
Sembalun Village ➔ Pos 1 (Pemantauan)
⏱️ Walking Time: ± 2 hoursAltitude 1,300 masl. Warm to hot temperatures (25°C - 30°C). The terrain is dominated by flat, wide-open savanna plains with no tree canopy cover. Searing tropical sun exposure.
Walk at a slow, steady, and constant pace (eco-pace). A sun hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are mandatory here. Drink water regularly before you feel thirsty to prevent early dehydration and heatstroke from the intense sun.
Pos 1 ➔ Pos 2 (Tengengean) — 🍽️ Lunch Break
⏱️ Walking Time: ± 1 hourAltitude 1,500 masl. Fairly cool under the shade of scattered trees (24°C - 28°C). The trail begins to slope upward gently with dusty terrain.
While waiting for the fresh lunch prepared by our porter team, loosen your shoelaces to restore proper blood circulation to your feet. Do light stretching on your calves and thighs. Avoid sitting completely still immediately after walking; keep moving slightly to cool down your muscles so they do not stiffen up for the steeper uphill climbs ahead.
Pos 2 ➔ Pos 3 (Pada Balong)
⏱️ Walking Time: ± 1.5 hoursAltitude 1,800 masl. Temperatures begin to cool down (20°C - 24°C). Mountain winds start blowing harder, and the tree line thins out completely.
Keep your walking pace steady to avoid stomach cramps right after lunch. Take a short 5-10 minute break at Pos 3 to eat sweet snacks (like chocolates or dates) to refuel your glycogen levels before facing the hardest section of the day.
Pos 3 ➔ Sembalun Crater Rim (Plawangan) — ⛺ Camp 1
⏱️ Walking Time: ± 3.5 hours (Hills of Regret)Altitude 2,639 masl. Temperatures drop drastically from cool to freezing, ranging from 10°C - 15°C in the late afternoon and falling as low as 5°C at night. The trail is heavily inclined with dirt steps and gravel roots.
This section is highly demanding both physically and mentally. Use the "Rest Step" technique (lock your back knee for a fraction of a second with every step to momentarily rest your thigh muscles). As soon as you arrive at the campsite, change out of your sweat-soaked clothes into dry gear and a thick jacket immediately to prevent hypothermia. Enjoy the high-carb dinner provided by our team, and go to sleep early (by 8:00 PM max) to prepare for the midnight summit attack.
Plawangan Sembalun ➔ Rinjani Summit (3,726 masl) ➔ Danau Segara Anak & Hot Springs ➔ Torean Crater Valley (Camp 2)
Midnight climb to the summit, descent to the volcanic crater lake, relaxing in natural hot springs, and trekking down to camp inside the magnificent Torean Canyon Crater.
± 11 - 12 hours (Long, intense, but incredibly rewarding day)
3,726 masl (Highest Point of Lombok)
🗺️ Pos-to-Pos Detailed Journey
Sembalun Crater Rim ➔ Rinjani Summit (3,726 masl) — Summit Attack
⏱️ Walking Time: ± 3 - 4 hours (Starts at 02:00 AM)Altitude climb from 2,639 masl to 3,726 masl. Extreme freezing weather ranging from 0°C to 5°C with severe wind chill. The terrain consists of thick, loose volcanic ash and scree (two steps forward, one slide back) on a narrow ridge path.
Dress in layers (layering system) and wear warm gloves, a beanie, and a windbreaker jacket. Trekking poles are mandatory to support your weight on the loose scree. Focus on rhythmic breathing (inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth). Keep trail breaks very short (1-2 minutes maximum) to prevent your body temperature from dropping and your muscles from locking up in the cold.
Rinjani Summit back to Sembalun Crater Rim
⏱️ Walking Time: ± 2 hours downAltitude drops back to 2,639 masl. Temperatures gradually warm up as the sun rises (15°C - 20°C).
When sliding down the volcanic ash trail, lean your body slightly forward and bend your knees to absorb the impact. Do not lock your knees to prevent joint or meniscus injuries. Once back at the tents, drink hot tea/coffee and enjoy a hot breakfast prepared by our crew before packing up.
Sembalun Crater Rim down to Danau Segara Anak — 🍽️ Lunch Break
⏱️ Walking Time: ± 3 hours descentAltitude drops from 2,639 masl down to 2,009 masl. Temperatures become pleasantly cool (18°C - 22°C). The trail down to the lake is very steep, rocky, and involves traversing iron ladders and narrow rocky cliffs.
Use your hands to hold onto the safety rails where provided. Step carefully on the rocky path. Your knees will do a lot of braking work here, so take short breathers. Upon arrival at the lake, enjoy a magnificent lunch prepared by the lakeside.
Healing at Natural Hot Springs & Trekking to Torean Crater Valley — ⛺ Camp 2
⏱️ Walking Time: ± 1h Rest + ± 2.5 to 3 hours descentAltitude descending from 2,009 masl down to around 1,400 masl into the deep Torean volcanic crater valley. Temperatures are comfortable but can get very misty and humid (16°C - 20°C). The trail passes massive cascading waterfalls (Penimbungan Waterfall viewpoint) and follows a rushing turquoise sulfur river.
Soak your sore muscles in the natural sulfur hot springs near the lake for 30-45 minutes. The warm sulfur water is excellent for releasing muscle tension, lactic acid build-up, and fatigue from the summit. When moving down the canyon, be careful of slippery moss-covered rocks. We will set up Camp 2 right inside the massive canyon crater valley, surrounded by towering 500-meter vertical green cliffs.
Torean Crater Valley to Torean Gate ➔ Senaru Basecamp ➔ Next Destination
Trekking down through the narrow Torean canyon steps and tropical jungle, exiting the gate, returning to Senaru basecamp to collect bags, and transferring to your next location.
± 5 - 6 hours (pure descent)
Torean Village Gate (585 masl)
🗺️ Pos-to-Pos Detailed Journey
Torean Crater Valley Camp ➔ Pos 3 (Mondokan Lolon)
⏱️ Walking Time: ± 2 hoursAltitude 1,400 masl to 1,200 masl. Temperatures are mild to warm (22°C - 26°C). The trail involves walking along very narrow cliff-side paths with safety cables, crossing metal/wooden bridge steps, and looking down into deep canyon drops.
This section requires a high focus and a steady head for heights. Keep your hands free and pack away your trekking poles if you need to hold onto the cliff-side safety wires. Maintain a slow, careful step.
Pos 3 (Mondokan Lolon) ➔ Pos 2 (Montong Satas)
⏱️ Walking Time: ± 1.5 hoursAltitude 1,200 masl down to 900 masl. Weather becomes increasingly humid and warm (24°C - 28°C). The trail enters a dense tropical rainforest with muddy paths and giant tree roots.
Watch out for slippery wet roots and sudden muddy drops. Drink water frequently to replace fluids lost through high jungle humidity.
Pos 2 (Montong Satas) ➔ Torean Village Finish Gate
⏱️ Walking Time: ± 2 hoursAltitude drops from 900 masl down to 585 masl. The weather turns hot and tropical (26°C - 30°C). The trail flattens out, passing through local farmlands, open fields, and village borders.
Your muscles will be highly fatigued at this final stretch. Keep your focus so you do not trip over minor rocks. Keep using your trekking poles to alleviate pressure on your lower back and ankles.
Post-Trek Transfer & Luggage Collection
Our private AC vehicle will pick you up directly at the Torean finish gate and drive you back to our main basecamp in Senaru Village (approx. a 25-minute drive).
Enjoy a well-deserved, refreshing hot shower at our basecamp, change into clean clothes, and collect the main luggage you safely stored on Day 0.
Once you are fully ready and repacked, our private driver will transfer you safely in our private car to your next stop in Lombok (Lombok Airport, Bangsal Harbor for Gili Islands/Bali, Senggigi, or Kuta Lombok).

PHYSICAL FITNESS WARNING
The 3D2N Sembalun Up - Torean Down package is an advanced and highly strenuous cross-trek, especially on Day 2 due to the combined long summit, steep lake descent, and canyon trek.
Solid physical training (running, stairs climbing, or regular cardio) 2-3 weeks prior to the trek is mandatory to safely complete this route.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (3D2N SEMBALUN-TOREAN)
1 Why is the 3D2N Sembalun Up - Torean Down route highly recommended? ❯
This cross-route offers the ultimate variety of landscapes. Entering from Sembalun allows you to tackle the peak efficiently via open savannas. Exiting via Torean saves your joints from standard steep downhills, taking you instead through spectacular canyon ridges, rushing turquoise rivers, and massive waterfalls.
2 Where do we store our extra luggage since we enter and exit from different gates? ❯
You will leave your travel bags, suitcases, and extra items safely at our main LOMBOK RINJANI GUIDE basecamp in Senaru Village on Day 0. When you finish the trek at the Torean gate on Day 3, our private vehicle will instantly drive you back to the Senaru basecamp to retrieve your belongings.
3 How difficult is Day 2 of this specific itinerary? ❯
Day 2 is extremely challenging and demands exceptional mental toughness. You will perform the midnight summit attack (3-4 hours), descend back to camp (2 hours), hike down to the volcanic lake (3 hours), and then trek another 3 hours into the Torean canyon. Expect roughly 11 to 12 total hours of intense physical activity.
4 Can people with vertigo or a severe fear of heights do the Torean exit route? ❯
We do not recommend the Torean route for individuals with severe vertigo. The upper canyon trails include narrow paths carved into massive cliff-walls with steep vertical drops. While our guides provide maximum physical assistance and safety support cables are installed, a steady head for heights is required.
5 What are the nighttime temperatures at both campsites? ❯
On Night 1 at the Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 masl), temperatures are freezing, ranging between 5°C and 10°C (dropping near 0°C at the summit). On Night 2 inside the Torean Crater Valley (approx. 1,400 masl), the climate is significantly milder and more humid, hovering around 16°C to 20°C.
6 Is it safe to swim in the hot springs and the volcanic lake? ❯
Yes, soaking in the natural hot springs is highly recommended. The warm sulfur water works wonders to relax sore muscles and clear lactic acid build-up. Swimming in Segara Anak Lake is generally allowed, but you must strictly follow the safety instructions and boundary zones outlined by your mountain guide.
7 Are there clean toilets available along the Torean trail or at the campsites? ❯
There are no public toilet facilities on the mountain. To ensure your absolute comfort and privacy, LOMBOK RINJANI GUIDE porters carry and set up a private, enclosed toilet tent at both campsites every night.
8 What kind of food is served during this 3-day expedition? ❯
Our skilled mountain porters prepare fresh, hot, and hygienic meals three times a day. The menu includes diverse local and Western dishes rich in protein and carbohydrates, such as fried rice, noodles, chicken curry, spaghetti, pancakes, fresh tropical fruits, biscuits, and hot tea/coffee.
9 What should I do if I get injured or cannot continue the trek in the canyon? ❯
Our guides are fully certified in mountain first aid. For minor injuries, we carry a complete medical kit. In cases of severe exhaustion or injury, local emergency porter evacuation systems can be arranged to carry you down securely. Mount Rinjani National Park tracking tickets also include standard entry medical insurance cover.
10 Can I hire a private porter to carry my personal daypack? ❯
Yes. The standard package includes porters who strictly carry group equipment (tents, food, cooking gear). If you prefer to hike light without carrying your personal backpack, you can hire a dedicated private porter through LOMBOK RINJANI GUIDE for an additional fee of USD 25 - 30 per day.
